Blocked Kitchen Sink? Here's Why It Keeps Happening (And Why Jetting Is the Best Long-Term Fix)

A blocked kitchen sink is one of the most common drainage problems we attend across the Scottish Borders, and while it can seem like it happens overnight, the blockage has often been building up quietly for years.

We were recently called out to a customer with a completely blocked kitchen sink. They contacted us in the morning, and we attended the same day to get things flowing again. Whenever possible, JD Drain Away aims to attend all call-outs on the same day, helping customers get back to normal as quickly as possible.

Although every blockage is different, the cause is often the same.

What Causes a Blocked Kitchen Sink?

Most kitchen sink blockages are caused by fat, grease and cooking oils.

Many people never deliberately pour fat down the sink, but even small amounts left on frying pans, roasting trays and plates are washed away with hot water and washing-up liquid.

The problem is that once this grease enters the drain, it begins to cool and stick to the inside of the pipework.

Over months and years, each tiny layer builds upon the last until the drain becomes narrower and narrower. Food scraps, coffee grounds and other debris then become trapped, eventually causing the sink to drain slowly or stop draining altogether.

By the time water starts backing up into the sink, the blockage has usually been developing for a long time.

Why We Recommend High-Pressure Drain Jetting

When it comes to clearing a blocked kitchen sink, there are different methods available, but they don't all produce the same results.

At JD Drain Away, we recommend high-pressure drain jetting wherever appropriate because it doesn't simply create a small opening through the blockage—it cleans the inside of the drain.

Powerful jets of water break up grease, fat and built-up debris before flushing it completely out of the drainage system.

The result is a drain that's much closer to its original condition and far less likely to block again in the near future.

Why Drain Rodding Isn't Always the Best Solution

Drain rods certainly have their place, but for kitchen sink blockages caused by years of grease build-up, they often only punch a small hole through the blockage.

While this allows the water to drain away again, much of the grease remains stuck to the inside of the pipe.

Over time, debris quickly begins collecting again and the blockage can return much sooner than expected.

Jetting removes the build-up far more thoroughly, helping to keep your drains flowing freely for much longer.

How to Help Prevent Kitchen Sink Blockages

A few simple habits can significantly reduce the chance of future blockages:

  • Avoid pouring cooking oils or fats down the sink.

  • Wipe greasy pans with kitchen roll before washing them.

  • Scrape leftover food into the bin rather than the sink.

  • Use a sink strainer to catch food waste.

  • If your sink starts draining slowly, have it investigated before it becomes completely blocked.

Prevention is always easier—and usually cheaper—than dealing with a complete blockage.
