Real Job Guide: Removing an 8 Metre Tree Root from a Blocked Drain in Peebles

A recent call-out in Peebles, Scottish Borders, began with what looked like a fairly straightforward overflowing drain. The customer had noticed water backing up instead of draining away properly, so they asked us to investigate before the problem became any worse.
At first glance it appeared to be a typical blocked drain, but as we started investigating it quickly became clear that the blockage was far more extensive than expected.
What We Found
After opening the inspection chamber and tracing the blockage, we discovered that tree roots had entered the drainage system and grown for approximately eight metres inside the drain.
Although overflowing drains are often caused by grease, wipes or general debris, tree roots are another common cause, particularly where older drainage systems have small cracks or displaced joints that allow roots to enter.
Once inside, the roots continue to grow towards the constant supply of moisture, gradually catching debris and restricting the flow of water until the drain eventually overflows.
How We Cleared the Drain
To remove the blockage, we carefully jet washed around the root system, breaking up the surrounding soil and built-up debris so the roots could be safely removed without causing unnecessary damage.
As more of the root became exposed, it became clear just how far it had travelled through the drainage system.
In total, we removed approximately eight metres of tree root from the drain before thoroughly cleaning the pipework and restoring the flow.
Why Tree Roots Cause Blocked Drains
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that tree roots don't usually break into drains on their own.
Instead, they take advantage of existing weaknesses in the pipework, such as:
Small cracks
Open joints
Older clay drainage systems
Damaged pipe connections
Once inside, the roots continue to grow and begin trapping toilet paper, grease, leaves and other debris until the drain becomes restricted or completely blocked.

The Result
Once the roots had been completely removed, the drain was flowing freely again and the overflowing drain issue was resolved.
It's a great example of why recurring drain problems shouldn't simply be cleared and forgotten. Taking the time to investigate the underlying cause can prevent repeated call-outs and more expensive repairs later on.
